How to Stay Rooted in Biblical Truth on a College Campus
College is an exciting time of growth, personal discovery and exploration — but for many Christian students, it can also be a spiritual battleground.
Today’s campus culture is heavily influenced by postmodern thinking, which elevates personal feelings above objective truth. Students are often told to “live your truth” and “follow your heart,” even when those paths directly oppose the authority of Scripture. In addition to this, too many teachers and professors have decided the Bible is no longer relevant, and actively teach students it is only one of many valid ways to obtain truth about life. The result? Many young believers find themselves feeling isolated, confused, or pressured to compromise their convictions.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. With intentional steps and God’s grace, students can remain BIBLICALLY RESILIENT — holding firmly to truth, while walking with compassion and courage.
Here are five essential practices to help college students stay strong in biblical truth:
1. Build Your Life on the Word of God
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”Matthew 7:24 (NIV)
The Word of God isn’t just a devotional tool — it’s your foundation for life. College presents you with countless new ideas, arguments, and worldviews. Without a strong biblical filter, it’s easy to get swept away. Start each day in Scripture. Remind yourself daily that God’s Word is not just a good guidebook, but is the primary source of information about living a flourishing life in a fallen world. Let God’s truth shape how you think, speak, and respond to the world around you. No matter what, do not be ashamed of it. The truth of God’s Word has always been relevant, and how consistently outlived it’s harshest critics in each generation.
2. Know the Difference Between God’s Truth and Cultural Lies
“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.”Isaiah 5:20 (NIV)
Culture often presents lies wrapped in emotionally appealing language. Phrases like “Love is love,” “Live your truth,” or “Do what makes you happy” can sound right — but they’re often out of step with God’s design for your life and can easily lead you astray. Learn to spot the difference between what feels right and what IS right. Scripture, not emotion, is the final authority.
3. Surround Yourself with Biblically Grounded Community
“Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together...”Hebrews 10:24–25 (NIV)
You don’t have to walk this road alone. Whether it’s your campus ministry, small group, or local church, find a place where you can grow with others who share your values. Get involved, do your best to build relationships, and decide to serve with your talents. We are much stronger when living the Christian life with other faithful people. Community encourages, protects, and sharpens your faith.
4. Pray for Wisdom and Boldness
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God...” James 1:5“Now, Lord… enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.” Acts 4:29
Prayer isn’t a last resort — it’s your first defense! Ask God for the wisdom to navigate difficult conversations and the boldness to stand for truth. Remember, faithfulness isn’t about being loud or argumentative. It’s about being anchored, available, and unashamed.
5. Live with Integrity and Compassion
“Always be prepared to give an answer… but do this with gentleness and respect.”1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
In a world full of division and outrage, kindness stands out. You don’t have to agree with everyone — but you can always treat them with respect. Realize it is OK to define morality differently than the secular world, and resist the temptation to just go with the flow, but practice kindness toward those who disagree with you. Live out your faith with sincerity, humility, and grace. Often, the way you live will speak louder than the words you say. In the end, people are drawn to those who show integrity and authenticity.
Final Encouragement
Being Biblically Resilient doesn’t mean having all the answers — it means holding on to the right anchor, God’s unchanging Word! The storm may come, but your foundation is secure. As Paul said:
“Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? … If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”Galatians 1:10 (NIV)
So press on. Stand firm. Stay rooted in the truth. And know that God will honor your faithfulness.
